01Concept to prototype

Brief and
concepts

PK's point-source series needed a sub for rooms too small for an 18-inch box. The challenge: a small cabinet with a large amplifier, and a port that stays quiet at full output.

Specification

I drafted and refined the product architecture specification, and secured sign-off before detailed design.

Use cases

  • Corporate events and conferences
  • VIP and backstage fills
  • Installs in bars, clubs and theatres
  • Not for sub walls or flown arrays

Key choices

  • Handles: off-the-shelf omni handles cut cost and keep a good grip in any orientation
  • Grille: one grille over the driver and port gives a cleaner look and a lower BoM

Driver selection

Two 15-inch drivers built for mid-bass were compared with the Meyer 750-LFC in listening tests. Neither sounded as good in a sub, which reopened the driver choice.

Prototypes

I wrote the toolpaths, CNC-machined and built the plywood test cabinets myself, to prove the port, bracing and handle pockets.

02Development

Quieter port, proven rigging

In a cabinet this small, the amplifier crowds the port entry. The port was reshaped, and the rigging was load-tested before release.

  1. Flared port A 48° flare with an R80 edge smooths the airflow at the amp. It reuses the curved-edge process and tooling from the Tx14.
  2. Rigging points, not a flying frame M10 points carry the install bracket now. A flying frame could bolt to the sides later, the same route as the L-Acoustics SB15m.
  3. Two brackets, not a U The heavier cabinet needed more strength than a U-bracket, so the install kit is a pair. Shackle holes allow chain suspension.
  4. Castors as an option Installs don't need castors, so they're a kit. One standard cabinet, and the cost stays off the main BoM.

03Accessories

A kit for each kind of job

Castors, a soft cover and an install bracket are sold separately, so touring and install customers buy only what they need. I oversaw CB Scheme certification for the sub and each accessory.
